a new look for “lost dogs?”

Recently, someone suggested to me that the cover of my novel Lost Dogs –a story of the apocalypse as seen, heard, and smelled by a dog–should be revised to be more reflective of its genre.

The current cover was done by my pal and professional artist James Arnold, and while this person greatly admired the vector-art depiction of Buddy, the German Shepherd protagonist, they argued that the background image, with its lush green landscape and blue sky, was too bucolic for a story about the end of the world.

I’ve loved James’ cover ever since I first laid eyes on it, and whenever I’m hand-selling books, I get compliments on it.  Buddy’s colors are blended just so, the fracturing around the edges is an excellent tough, and the eyes–the eyes are what make the piece.

I decided to entertain this person’s critique, and I put together a mock-up of what they suggested the cover should be.  It still use the striking image of Buddy, but the background would now be darker, with a scene of desolation.

Lost Dogs has hundreds of passionate fans, so I’d like to hear from them.  Which cover do you prefer: the original (let’s call it Cover A), or the proposed new one (Cover B)?  Let me know in the comments, or e-mail me at kentonkilgoreATkentonilgoreDOTcom.

Let’s give it a week, and I’ll let you know the results.  And thanks for your opinion!
