Here are a few of the upcoming movies I’m looking forward to seeing, presented with some commentary and possible spoilers.
Not a “summer” movie, seeing as how it opens at the beginning of April, but who cares? This one looks like what you get when you cross Marvel and Mission Impossible. Joining Captain America are long-time allies and foes like Black Widow, Nick Fury, the Falcon (those wings are bitchin’), Winter Solider, Batroc, and (hopefully) Crossbones.
POSSIBLE SPOILER: I have a suspicion that “Alexander Pierce” (played by Robert Redford) turns out to be the Red Skull in disguise, having survived his encounter with the Tesseract/ Cosmic Cube at the end of the first CA movie, returned to Earth, and infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. to destroy it from the inside.
On May 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 drops, with much-cooler, much-upgraded versions of Electro, Rhino (love that one-man tank suit!), and Green Goblin (or will that be “Hobgoblin“?): what’s not to like?
POSSIBLE SPOILER: Aunt May has known Peter’s alter-ego since the end of the first ASM movie, and is trying to get him to admit it. Also, Gwen Stacy will NOT die, despite wearing the same outfit in which she perished in the comics. Because that would be too obvious.
My word, is there a wealth of talent in this movie: Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Ian McKellan, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, etc., etc. My issue with previous X-Men movies (and this one) is that the casts are often huge, and you don’t get much of the characterization that made the comics hits in the ’80s.
POSSIBLE SPOILER: Magneto re-coats Wolverine’s claws in adamantium, the better to take out freaky Sentinel robots with.
I’ll mention two other non-superhero films, one I’m looking forward to, one I’ll definitely miss.
New Godzilla movie, you have one job: Big G breathes fire and wrecks shit. And no, he does not run and hide from tanks and planes, like in that previous crapfest.
I sorta liked the original Transformers cartoon back in the ’80’s, but the first movie was too stupid and too visually busy for me (I couldn’t tell which robots were fighting), so I skipped the next two. And I’m going to skip this one, too.
How about you? What sci-fi/fantasy/superhero movies are you looking forward to seeing this year?
